Job Summary

This position is the perfect opportunity for an experienced Director of Finance professional who is looking to join a mission driven organization and to make an impact.

The Finance Department manages the financial planning and accounting, including budgeting and expenditure control. The Department provides financial reporting, payroll services, accounts payable, grants financial reporting, advocacy and political spending monitoring and reporting, among other things. The Department leads in the preparation of the annual operating budget process, as well as monthly monitoring budget vs actual spend down. The Department is also responsible for leading in the coordination of the annual audits – financial and federal grant audits.

It is the department’s goal to provide professional financial and accounting support to facilitate fiscal and organizational decisions by departments and executive leadership in achieving the goals and objectives of the organization.

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Director of Finance is responsible for the central coordination of all financial activities and assists with reviewing and analyzing the organization’s financial position and implementing sound financial practices. Primary duties will include the development, analysis, and interpretation of accounting and budget information to inform critical decisions, audit, tax, and other compliance filings, grant financial reporting, among other things. The Director of Finance position provides leadership and direction. The Finance Director is an active member of the Executive leadership team, reports to the COO, and manages direct reports.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following areas:

Organizational Leadership

  • Actively participate as a thought partner with the COO and other members of the senior leadership team to co-create organizational decisions and provide peer support to other team members.
  • Lead and develop an internal team to support the finance, budgeting, facilities, and IT functions.
  • Play a critical role in collaborating with the senior leadership team in strategic decision-making and operations as the organization continues to enhance its quality programming and build capacity.
  • Lead efforts to increase financial literacy across the organization to promote effective budget management and develop internal leadership.
  • Provide leadership, staff development and supervision for direct and indirect reports.

Finance

  • Oversee the financial strategic planning of the organization by evaluating its performance and potential risks
  • Recommend and implement systems, policies, procedures, and controls which assure that our financial operation functions efficiently and effectively; is designed to account accurately for various grantors and funding streams; and complies with standard nonprofit accounting principles
  • Analyze and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly and annual financial statements; collate financial reporting materials for all donor segments, and oversee all financial, project/program and grants accounting
  • Coordinate and lead the annual audit process, including preparation of audit schedules, liaise with external auditors
  • Assist outside accountants with the preparation of the annual 990, and other tax filings
  • Oversee and lead annual budgeting and planning process; administer and review all financial plans and budgets; monitor progress and changes; and keep senior leadership team abreast of the organization’s financial status.
  • Manage organizational cash flow and forecasting.
  • Implement a robust contracts management and financial management/ reporting system; ensure that the contract billing and collection schedule is adhered to, and that financial data and cash flow are steady and support operational requirements.
  • Lead financial coordination of capital project, which include budget vs actual tracking and reporting
  • Update and implement all necessary business policies and accounting practices; improve the finance department’s overall policy and procedure manual.
  • Maintains established internal controls; assesses internal controls and proposes adjustments to policies as needed
  • Provide expertise and guidance on all finance and accounting related issues and ensure compliance with appropriate federal, state and local requirements.
  • Keeps informed of new GAAP requirements and recommends changes to the COO
  • Effectively communicate and present the critical financial matters to the Board of Directors.
  • Other projects as assigned

Role Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
  • 8 years of progressive finance experience
  • Solid knowledge of nonprofit accounting standards and experience in all accounting operations.
  • Experience with federal grants and audits is preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

  • Strong applied computer skills, with solid understanding of financial accounting systems
  • Expert knowledge with Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word
  • Excellent interpersonal, analytical, organizational, and management skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a face paced environment
  • Function independently, be proactive, and take initiative
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred
  • Strong work ethic and attention to detail
